HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones since iOS 11. It uses the HEIF standard and produces files roughly half the size of JPEG at similar quality. However, HEIC is not natively supported on Windows or many web platforms, which is why conversion is often needed.
