Converting to a lossless format (PNG, WebP lossless) preserves full quality. Converting to a lossy format (JPEG, WebP lossy, AVIF) applies compression that may introduce minor artifacts. Converting from one lossy format to another (e.g. JPEG to JPEG) can compound quality loss, so it is best to start from the original.
